Trans-Sport.tv Limited Case Study
A Retford-based company, which supplies infrastructure to media companies worldwide, is broadcasting a major uplift one year into a package of support from Sheffield City Region Growth Hub.
Trans-Sport.TV provides tailored solutions for broadcasters - and boasts an impressive client base including Sky Sports, World Snooker, Matchroom Sport, PokerStars, ITV, Discovery, and Eurosport, as well as being a contractor of choice to the BBC Special Events Team covering all Royal and Parliamentary events.
The Trans-Sport.TV team design, manufacture and install broadcast events equipment for projects such as weekly Premier League Darts Events and the World Championship Snooker Event held annually in Sheffield.
A family business set up by husband and wife team Shaun and Helen Cope 25 years ago, the firm has gone from strength to strength in recent years having earned an industry-leading reputation among major UK and international broadcasters.
In 2017, Trans-Sport.TV turned to Sheffield City Region Growth Hub to take its business growth ambitions to the next level.
With advice and guidance from Business Growth Specialist Marcus Pearson, Shaun and Helen were able to access a £3,250 grant to invest in developing the skills and expertise of the Trans-Sport.TV management team. The grant scheme is part of a programme of support available to growth companies via the ‘Sheffield City Region Growth Hub Enhancement Project’, and is financed by the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.
The company was able to use the funding to tap into the services of business coach David Williams to review and improve its internal management structures. David has also supported Shaun and Helen around developing strategic direction and future proofing, as their children William and Rosie enter the senior management team.
New management structures have been put in place to ensure improved lines of accountability and control within the business which has improved both productivity and profitability.
For Helen it has been just what the company needed, to understand how its internal management systems could contribute to improving business performance.
Helen explains: “We’ve always known we have great staff who enable us to deliver a great product and service. We have a loyal and committed customer base which thankfully continues to grow. The Growth Hub has been useful in giving us the opportunity to take a step back and take an objective look at where we want to take the business. At the heart of that is ensuring our people are well equipped to help deliver those ambitions - to ours and their benefit.”
Helen adds: “We’re passionate about our people who are critical to the success of the business. We don’t just pay lip service to that but are committed to investing in our talent across the board to ensure they have satisfying and rewarding careers and benefit from our growth ambitions.”
“The coaching has now meant we have better lines of management accountability which ensures clearer reporting lines with the teams working on site. And we’re now extending that to cover our office structure which supports the teams in the field.
“It’s been a good year for us since we began making these changes and hopefully these improvements will now give us the capacity to grow even further.”
Further assistance from the Growth Hub has since been secured with the award of a £4,500 Skills Bank grant to fund management development training.

We are proud to announce Trans-Sport.tv has joined Mates in Mind, a registered charity which provides a framework to raise awareness, address the stigma surrounding mental health and improves positive mental wellbeing in the UK Construction Industries.
The organisation is led by and for the industry in partnership with the Health in Construction Leadership Group and British Safety Council as well as other leading organisations and charities such as Mind, Samarians and Mental Health First Aid England.
We recognise that the stigma often associated with poor mental health can often be perceived as difficult as the experience itself. Even though many of us will experience stress, depression or anxiety at some point in our lives, we may often be afraid to talk about it or to seek help and support.
We want to demonstrate our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of our workforce. Mates in Mind help us take an important step towards breaking the silence and stigma that can surround mental wellbeing in society, and in particular, in the construction industry. We are joining numerous other construction companies in supporting Mates in Mind, helping to improve the mental health and well-being of our people.
As a Supporter of Mates in Mind, we also gain access to support and communication materials as well as a range of awareness and training programmes – helping us to take a joined-up approach to improving mental health & wellbeing.
Commenting on Mates in Mind, William Cope, Rigger Manager
Joining Mates in Mind is a logical step forward for ourselves, we are incredibly passionate about supporting our crew wherever, whenever or however possible. By joining Mates in Mind we are being provided with support, training and more importantly a structure to enable us to tackle these complex and unfortunately very common issues. The statistics make glum reading, right now 1 in 6 workers in the UK is experiencing depression, anxiety or stress. This statistic coupled with the shocking fact that suicide is now the leading cause of death in men between the ages of 15 and 49 really made me realise that the time to brush these issues under the carpet or refuse to accept the statistics is over – Trans-Sport.TV is 100% committed to taking whatever steps are necessary to raise awareness surrounding mental health, break the silence and stigma surrounding these issues and to learn how, when and where to get support. We believe that everyone deserves the help and support they need and this is a huge step in achieving that. I am personally very excited to be working with Mates in Mind but also incredibly proud that as an organisation we are brave enough to start this conversation, highlight these issues and really start promoting mental wellbeing within our industry.
You can access qualified counsellors and advisors through the Construction Industry Helpline, available 24/7 on 0345 605 1956, as well as access to a range of other support services which can be found on www.matesinmind.org

In 2007 PLASA launched the National Rigging Certificate, the aim of this accreditation is to bring a national standard to the entertainment rigging community. Fast-forward 5 years and Trans-Sport have 7 (and counting) qualified Level 2 riggers. Trans-Sport decided to make the commitment to the NRC early on with MD Shaun Cope first to achieve the Level 3 qualification, he felt that in order to maintain Trans-Sport’s commitment to safety it was tailor made for the firm.
The company has a good working relationship with UK Rigging having a policy to send new and experienced members of staff to the Bolton site in order to gain experience and knowledge from one of the industry experts; therefore it seemed a simple choice to be assessed at the UK Rigging site in Bolton.
Trans-Sport have also set up an in house training area and regularly conduct Tool Box Talks demonstrating new rigging equipment and techniques to ensure everyone working within the Company has a comprehensive knowledge and set of skills regardless of NRC status. It is the Company’s intention is for 100% of Trans-Sport rigging staff to attain Level 2 with a natural progression to Level 3 accreditation. Trans-Sport feels the NRC process allows individuals to be assessed externally, benchmarking themselves against industry standards and is committed to support staff throughout the scheme. For more information and details of our qualified Riggers follow the link below and search for Nottinghamshire in ‘County’. http://www.plasa.org/nrcqualifiedriggers

Trans-Sport Ltd have been investing heavily in the future of the company. Working globally in the TV and Live Media events industries, the decision was made to increase the size of their chain hoist stock and having dealt with entertainment rigging supplier Lift Turn Move since 2005, when it came to making a decision on new hoists MD Shaun Cope went straight to LTM: “LTM offered us the LoadGuard but we’d never used them before, so Dan put a hoist in the back of his car and drove over to the warehouse and gave us a demo.” LTM have been supplying LoadGuard hoists into the entertainment industry for nearly four years now, and Trans-Sport Ltd were quick to see the benefits of them and placed an order for 50 units. Shaun continued: “The LoadGuard is ideal for us. They are small, sturdy, quiet and compact. They’re also lighter than other hoists that we’ve used which is better for the crew and they’re easy to maintain, so the guys love them. We are very pleased with the LoadGuards; our customers can see that we’re investing in high quality and reliable products, so as well as growing the company we’re growing our reputation in the industry.”

In order to comply with the Low Emission regulations in London and other major European cities such as Berlin, Trans-Sport have purchased 3 new rigid vehicles from Sherwood Truck and Van based in Sheffield. The firm chose to deal with IVECO due to their good after sales service and also being able to provide a tailor made vehicle which suits the unusual nature of Trans-Sports events. In order to serve the media and television industry in the most efficient and cost effective way Trans-Sport had very specific requirements leading to them requesting and ordering 3 completely different vehicles. The first vehicle was a 7.5t rigid box van, ordered with a 23ft body and day cab in order to deliver a large but light load, equipped with a column tail-lift allowing safe loading and unloading in tight loading bays.
The second vehicle was an 18t rigid flatbed truck. This truck was again ordered with a day cab in order to optimise the maximum length allowed for rigid vehicles allowing long loads. The truck has been designed to carry modular structures such as the now infamous BBC Bubble Studio. The third vehicle was an 18t box vehicle specifically ordered and designed for the longer trips around Europe, this truck is equipped with a sleeper cab allowing the equipment to get to locations as quickly as possible whilst also providing maximum comfort for driver and travelling crew. All 3 vehicles are built to comply with Euro 5 Emission regulations and include the Eurotronic automatic gearbox. Although some drivers feel manual is best the team at Trans-Sport felt it important to progress with the technology available. The automatic box has improved fuel consumption, engine and clutch wear. Ultimately drivers and crew now feel it was the right move.
